DSA President Phil Aiello - Presidential Perspectives vlog, posted Feb 14, 2025

A New Era Begins

Today, a new era begins for Deaf Seniors of America (DSA). I am filled with immense pride and excitement to share this momentous milestone in our organization’s history: the appointment of Sherri Collins as our first-ever Executive Director.

This historic moment is a dream come true for DSA. Sherri’s appointment marks a significant step forward as we grow our capacity to advocate for and support older deaf adults across the country. Her role as a part-time Executive Director is a bold move toward strengthening DSA’s mission.

Sherri brings a remarkable combination of experience and passion to this role. With a proven track record in nonprofit leadership, policy advocacy, and senior services, she understands the unique challenges faced by older deaf adults. Please see her first official column and update on the Older Americans Act in the Winter 2025 issue of New Horizons.

Sherri Collins’s vision, drive, and commitment inspire us, and I am confident that her leadership will take DSA to new heights. This milestone is made possible because of your continued support of DSA’s mission.

As we take this exciting step, I invite you to stay engaged and connected with us. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and build a brighter future for deaf seniors across the nation.

Embracing Our Digital Future

As we look to the future, I am thrilled to share an exciting update about our beloved DSA quarterly magazine. Beginning with this issue, New Horizons is transitioning to a fully digital format. This change reflects our commitment to embracing modern communication methods that allow us to reach more members nationwide.

Going digital enables us to provide timely updates, visuals, and interactive content—all while reducing costs and minimizing our environmental impact. For members without regular access to digital devices, please rest assured. We are dedicated to keeping everyone informed and will provide alternative options. If you require assistance accessing the digital version, email DSA at info@deafseniors.us, and we will work with you to ensure you remain connected.

Thank you for your continued support as we take this step together. This transition reflects our commitment to building stronger connections with our members and supporters.

Expanding Our Network

I am excited to announce that DSA currently has over 40 organizational affiliates across the United States. These partnerships are vital in strengthening our community and ensuring that deaf seniors receive the support and resources they deserve.

We invite all deaf organizations nationwide to join us as affiliates. Becoming an affiliate keeps your organization informed about latest developments and offers opportunities to collaborate on initiatives that promote the well-being of deaf seniors.

To join, visit www.deafseniors.us/join and complete the organizational affiliate membership form. Together, we can create a more connected and empowered network of deaf organizations across the nation. We look forward to welcoming your organization to the DSA family!

Sharing Local and State Resources

The need for deaf-centered services for seniors is urgent. Across the nation, our community requires increased access to critical resources, which are essential to ensure that our seniors can live with dignity, comfort, and independence. These include:

  • Deaf-friendly housing

  • Specialized medical care

  • Caregiving support

  • Local deaf centers, clubs, and senior centers

We need your help! Share information about available local resources for deaf seniors in your area - send an email to Lance Fischer, DSA Resource Coordinator, at lance.fischer@deafseniors.us. Together, we can create a stronger, more supportive community.

Honoring Those Who Make a Difference

Every DSA conference is an opportunity to recognize individuals and organizations that have made a lasting impact on the deaf senior community. At DSA 2025, we will present three special awards to celebrate these outstanding contributions. See page in the 2025 Conference tab of the DSA website for award details.

Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized? Submit your recommendations to Elaine Navratil, Awards Committee Chair, at elaine.navratil@deafseniors.us.

Let’s come together to celebrate and honor those who inspire, lead, and make a difference!

Bylaws Amendment Proposals Needed

As required by DSA bylaws, any proposed changes must be announced 90 days before the conference to give members time to review them before the General Meeting vote. The current bylaws are available online at https://www.deafseniors.us/about (scroll to the bottom for PDF and Word versions).

Have suggestions for amendments? Send your recommendations to Harvey Corson, Bylaws Chair, at hjcorson@gmail.com. Your input helps keep DSA strong and forward-thinking!
